As bidders vied for 2-year-old cutting horses in training for lucrative and prestigious 2024 events, there was enough energy in Will Rogers Equestrian Center’s Watt Arena to light up Fort Worth on Monday, December 4, Day One of the 2023 Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales.
Session I of the NCHA Futurity 2-Year-Old Sales toppled previous records with an average of $94,258 and an increase of 14% over the previous record. In addition, there was an overall 25% increase over 2022 in gross dollars for 139 horses.
A full house of spectators, energized by the high stakes action, watched as 29 horses sold for $100,000 or more, including the high-seller at $600,000, Point Me South, consigned and in training with Adan Banuelos Performance Horses, and purchased by Todd Quirk, Denham Springs, La.
Point Me South, is a bay roan colt sired by Badboonarising (AQHA/APHA), the 2018 NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion and earner of $376,101, whose oldest foals are 2-year-olds of 2023. Point Me South’s dam, A Spoonful Short LTE $90,320, by Hes A Peptospoonful, has produced eight money earners, including Zuma LTE $27,347, by Purn Likesasmoothcat.
Tizzy Cat, consigned by Gregg Garvie, Agent for S Diamond Ranch and in training with Gregg Garvie, brought $500,000, the sale’s second-highest price, from Billy Wolf, Whitesboro, Tex. The red roan Metallic Cat daughter is out of CR Tuff Tizzy LTE $42,498, by Woody Be Tuff. CR Tuff Tizzy is a full or half-sister out of ARC Catty Dual, by Dual Pep, to the earners of $940,992.
Miss Nu Booty, sired by Badboonarising and consigned by Plantation Farms, was the third-highest seller at $330,000. Purchased in training with T.J. Good, by Clayton Edsall, Weatherford, Tex., the bay filly is out of Special Nu Kitty LTE $301,268, a High Brow Cat daughter with 10 money earners of $958,941, including Special Nu Boon LTE $316,671, by Boon Too Suen, and Hottish son Hott Nu Cowboy LTE $246,247, the 2020 NCHA Open World Champion Gelding.
Two horses each commanded a price of $280,000: Smooth Phantom Rollz, consigned by Rose Valley Ranch, and Nicole L G, consigned by Todd Nelson.
Smooth Phantom Rollz, sired by Rollz Royce, whose first foals are 3-year-olds of 2023, was purchased by Nathan Ahlin, Payson, Utah. The sorrel colt, in training with Marcus Spencer, is out of Smooth As A Cat daughter Holly Is Smooth LTE $230,752, the dam of 14 earners of $976,384, including three with $100,000 or more.
Nicole L G, by Reyzin The Cash, was purchased by Buck Creek Quarter Horses, Nemo, Tex. The chestnut filly, in training with Richard Jordan, is the first foal out of Betz LTE $10,402, by Bet Hesa Cat. Nicole L G’s third dam is the Dual Pep daughter Bueno Chex Dually LTE $153,797, producer of 20 earners of $992,197, including Cherry Chex Dually LTE $251,103, dam of 5 NCHA earners of $490,759, including DMAC Piccolo Pete LTE $193,863.
